Ok Go
Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky
Capitol Records
Obnoxiously long album title aside, the worst thing about this album is the inconsistency. I don’t think it ruined the record, but I think it could have been avoided — especially since this is their third album already. Damian Kulash and the crew are very capable of crafting neat little pop-rock packages without needing to muddy their efforts and that’s why I question their lack of focus.
Specifically, the first few songs like “WTF?” and “All Is Not Lost” start the album off with a disco/glam vibe and then slowly changes into the more classic OK Go fare. Not to say it is a terrible start, the track “This Too Shall Pass” is one of my favorite on the record — but it makes the album feel dis-jointed to me.
Songs like “End Love” help bridge the two sides together but I feel the most enjoyable segment of the record begins with “Before The Earth Was Round” and ends with “In The Glass”. The best song is the almost Beatles-like “Back From Kathmandu” which is helped by the change of pace from the acoustic “Last Leaf”.
Despite leading off swinging with a couple of tracks outside their strike-zone, they manage to pack a whole bunch of pop-rock beauties into the record.
