Lush. That’s what i immediately came to mind after listening to the album. The songs are crafted well, performed with a lot of musician-ship and are enthusiastically infused with emotion. Needless to say, It immediately made all the rounds on all my music-playing devices and is still going strong.
The title track “Something Over Nothing” immediately won me over as well as set the tone of the album. Don’t get me wrong, there are nice surprises sprinkled throughout… But the songs more often than not follow a pattern of an opening introductory concept and then follow that up with intense and quality finishing power. Said concepts range from bluesy guitar solos to violins, violas and keyboards (courtesy of talented band member Marika Anthony-Shaw, who does well contributing background vocals as well).
Marcus Paquin’s vocals are rich and heartfelt at the same time that really works for them (kind of reminds me of a less pandering version of Caleb Followill from Kings of Leon). He’s the lead song writer and he does a great job of performing his own work. In one of the knuckle balls of the album, “Ghosts” — Marcus’s vocals happily bounce along with this infectiously optimistic track and you can’t help but smile with every ‘tink of the triangle.
